Conditions That May Be Causing Your Tummy Troubles

Got tummy troubles? Feelin’ poopy? I know–it’s not a topic we like to talk about, is it?

Don’t worry–you’re not alone. But, digestive issues are far more common than you may realize. And once you understand the cause of your individual abdominal and digestive discomfort, targeted treatment plans and methods of relief are more likely improve your overall wellbeing.

Today, we’ll take a look at three of the most common digestive issues and how best to deal with them.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The digestive health issue that we tend to hear about the most is IBS which is, of course, short for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. One in every five people will suffer from this condition at some point or another in their lifetime.

Common IBS symptoms include:

  • stomach cramps
  • bloating
  • diarrhea
  • constipation

These symptoms will come and go over time; however, IBS itself tends to be a lifelong problem that will return time and time again. While the condition cannot currently be entirely cured, you can manage it effectively with medical treatment.

Treatment help reduce the frequency of flare-ups and discomfort that comes hand in hand with the disorder. Contact your doctor to help you determine if you do, in fact, have IBS. Your doctor will want to rule out other possible diagnoses.

Diverticulitis

Another common issue is diverticulitis. Some people will develop pouches called diverticula within their colon walls which can become inflamed or irritated. This inflammation and irritation can prove to be extremely uncomfortable.

Doctors and researchers are unsure of the specific causes of the development of diverticula, and there is currently no cure to the problem. However, just like IBS, you can take steps to reduce discomfort and frequency.

Some common symptoms of diverticulitis include:

  • Pain over several days, usually in the lower left abdomen
  • fever
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • nausea
  • constipation

Your doctor will need to diagnose the issue and recommend specific treatment, but one of the more common suggestions to prevent flare-upsis to incorporate more fiber into your diet.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

The third condition we will look at is GERD. GERD is short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. You’re more likely to have heard it referred to as acid reflux. Acid reflux creates an uncomfortable burning sensation when stomach acids back up into an individual’s esophagus. While we all experience acid reflux at some point or another, it can become problematic if you experience it often. Over the counter relief can be found in antacids, but if you find yourself taking these more than twice a week, it’s time to talk with your doctor.

In addition to a burning sensation in your throat, some of the common symptoms of GERD include:

  • Chest pain
  • Trouble sleeping due to burning, sour taste, and nausea
  • Trouble swallowing
  • The feeling of having a lump in your throat

These are just three of the various digestive issues you may experience, but they are three of the more common ailments. Hopefully, the above information will give you a better understanding of the symptoms you’re suffering from and when it may be time to speak with your doctor.
