Being healthy is one of those things that we would all say that we want to do. After all, a lot of people to tend to make getting healthier a big part of their New Year’s resolutions. But as we get further and further into the year, more and more people are going to start falling off the bandwagon. Diets get abandoned and gym memberships go unused. As much as many of us would say that we would love to be more healthy than we are, there’s no denying that there’s a good chance that most of us aren’t really able to keep up with the kind of lifestyle that we really want.

The question is why? After all, there are those who will say that it’s no reason other than laziness or a lack of commitment that a lot of people will fall off the wagon when it comes to a healthy lifestyle but the truth is a little more complicated than that. One of the most common reasons why you might be having trouble sticking to a more healthy lifestyle is that the way you’re thinking about your health is all wrong. This might sound a little odd. You might be thinking, how can there be different ways to think about your health? But it is entirely possible. With that in mind, here are some ways that you might be thinking about your health all wrong.

You’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

Before you decide to embark on any kind of significant lifestyle change, it’s important that you think carefully about your reasons behind it. Why have you decided to be more healthy? The truth is that a lot of people might not really have particularly satisfactory answers to that question. Far too often people end up deciding that they need to get healthy because they have been told so by other people or shamed for the way that they’re living their life.

Now, if there are people in your life who are worried about your health and are offering you genuine help then that’s one thing, but if people are trying to judge you for just living your life then not only is that unfair but it’s going to make it seriously hard to commit to any serious lifestyle changes. You need to decide to get healthy for yourself, not for anyone else. If you’re trying to live up to someone else’s expectations or be something that someone else wants you to be, that’s just going to leave you feeling unmotivated and miserable. If you want to make a change in your life, that’s great. Just do it for yourself and no one else.

You’re focusing entirely on how you look.

Here’s a big thing that a lot of people who are trying to “be more healthy” tend to miss. Healthy is not the same thing as thin. Far too often people decide that they have to become more healthy because they don’t fit into a particular dress size or because they want to look like some kind of idealized image that they see on TV or in a magazine. The first thing to remember is that even the people on TV and in magazines don’t look like that. They have hair and makeup teams as well as photoshop edits making them look so incredible. If you try and “get healthy” but you’re actually just trying to look a certain way, you’re going to end up getting discouraged and even run the risk of going too far and engaging in a lifestyle that will help you lose weight but that can be potentially incredibly damaging to your body and self-image.

You’re not setting realistic goals.

In a similar vein, you have to understand that your body is not the same as other people’s and you have to be aware of your limitations. You’re not necessarily going to be able to achieve the same kinds of things as other people and that’s okay. The only person you need to be healthier than is yourself. If you’re trying to set ridiculously ambitious goals then that just increases the chances that you’re not going to be able to meet them. When that happens you could well find yourself becoming totally discouraged and giving up entirely. Instead, try to set clear, achievable goals that you actually think that you can reach. You should also make sure that those goals are specific. If you try and do things in a vague way then you’re just going to end up moving the goalposts around and never getting to a point where you feel as though you’ve made any real progress.

You’re putting way too much pressure on yourself.

Far too many people treat themselves horribly when it comes to trying to become more healthy. They act as though any setbacks that they experience are simply because they are a bad person or a failure. They act as though they should be able to reach their goals instantly and if they can’t it’s because there is something wrong with them. The sheer amount of self-loathing involved in trying to get healthy is something that really shouldn’t be that surprising. We live in a world that actively tries to make sure that you feel as bad about yourself as possible. Because if you feel bad about yourself then companies can sell you ways to feel better or to be better. However, the truth is that as long as you’re making the effort to be better than you were yesterday, you’re doing great. Sure, you’re going to have setbacks from time to time but that happens to everyone. Try not to be so hard on yourself all of the time and give yourself a break every so often!

You’re following the wrong advice.

There is so much advice on the internet about different ways to get healthy that it’s kind of crazy. The problem is that it can be near impossible to figure out what advice is correct and what is bogus, especially when you get to the point that different sources are directly contradicting one another. The truth is that you have to remember that most of the advice isn’t coming from a professional or accredited source, it’s coming from blogs and websites with personal or professional biases.

The truth is that there’s only really one place you can go for concrete guidance on how to get healthy that you can rely on: your doctor. You need to make sure that you speak to your doctor about any health worries that you might be having and get their advice before looking online for different solutions. If you get advice from the wrong source then not only could you end up choosing a path that’s not really going to help you but you could end up doing things that are going to actively cause you harm.

You’re ignoring your mental health entirely.

One of the biggest, and most common, mistakes that just about everyone makes when they decide that they’re going to embrace a more healthy lifestyle is the fact that they ignore one incredibly important thing: their mental health. No matter how driven you might be to be more healthy, if you’re only thinking about your body and not your brain, you’re always going to end up struggling.

For one thing, if your mental health is struggling then you’re never going to have the motivation or drive to be as healthy as you want. Not to mention the fact that it won’t matter how healthy your body is if your mental health is suffering. There are plenty of resources out there on how to improve mental health you can access. Talking about these kinds of things can be scary for a lot of people who are worried that they’re going to be judged on it. However, you need to remember that your brain is an organ just like any other and you need to take care of it. There’s no shame in needing a little help now and then and taking care of your mental wellbeing is just as important to a healthy lifestyle as anything else.

Of course, just identifying a problem isn’t really the whole story. Sure, it’s an important step that you need to take but it is only one step towards a better and healthier lifestyle. The next thing that you need to do is to really start to put better ideas into practice. This might not be something that a lot of people are fully ready to here but there really is no magic formula for a healthy lifestyle. For one thing, everyone is different and what counts as a healthy way of living is going to be different for different people. It’s also important to remember that living a healthy life is something that takes work and commitment. If you’re not ready to put in the hard work required, then nothing is going to get you past the finish line. You have to be the one to make those changes in your life.
