Depression leaves us feeling numb . . . alone . . . exhausted . . . unmotivated . . . and too many other emotions for me to include in this list. On some days, just getting out of bed or taking a shower can be a monumental win. There are some things we can do, though, to help ourselves—that will actually make a difference in how we feel. Did you know that spending just 30 minutes a week doing outdoor activities can reduce the severity of your depression.

A quick-and-tiny-bit-off-topic thought . . .

I think it’s important not to view this (and other advice you come across online) as a “cure” for your depression, but instead as a strategy to manage your depression.

Once I began accepting depression as a part of my life, and thought of it as something I had the power to control, I found it became a bit easier to live with. That little shift in mindset made a big difference for me. I sincerely hope it will for you too!

Recent studies have found that just 30 minutes a week spent engaging in outdoor activities significantly reduces the risk of—and severity of–depression.

While it can be difficult to find the motivation, doing 30 minutes a week of just about anything is doable, right? Especially when those same 30 minutes can improve your mental health. Scientists in Australia backed up the research of many others with their findings of further evidence that connecting with nature enhances your physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Whether you spend time in a park, on a hiking trail, sitting by the pool, or simply walking around your neighborhood, spending time outside for at least 30 minutes a week will help you feel better. Not only will outdoor activities reduce depression, it will also lower your stress levels, blood pressure, and a help you tackle a whole host of other physical ailments.

I know for many, swimming is difficult and may even cause increased anxiety. If you’re one who enjoys being near the water, though, try to do it more often. Swimming has always been one of my go-to stress releivers. For me, there’s nothing like the peaceful “nothingness” of being underwater. Just don’t stay under there too long!

One more quick note . . . on the days you only manage to go get the mail from the mailbox or to sit on the porch for a few minutes–that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up! Even if you only manage to hop out of bed for a few minutes and open the window to let some fresh air and sunshine in, it’s still a win!

Those little wins are what might give you the motivation to do a tiny bit more the next time–and they matter!
